- One of the fundamental doctrines of plastic surgery is that every inch of tissue is of great value and has to be respected and reclaimed.
- Until recently that was not the exact case as far as the fat was concerned. It was considered a waste and was discarded.
- The contemporary position on fat is that it is certainly not a waste and as a matter of fact is a first class volumizing or filling material just like hyaluronic acid but far superior. It is used to treat volume deficits of the face, breast, buttocks or wherever indicated.
- The advantages are obvious: a large portion of the fat transferred stays to the recipient area forever, without the need to repeat the procedure every once in a while like we do with other fillers. Beneficiary is also the fact that we loose the fat deposits from unwanted sites through this process.
- There is a plethora of scientific studies supporting the fact that fat is additionally an elixir of youth for the rejuvenation of severely sun damaged skin.
- The safety of fat transfer has been well documented in many clinical trials and also by the fact that it’s one of the most frequently performed procedures worldwide for a variety of situations (trauma, breast reconstruction etc.). My personal experience in the treatment of many cases with severe skin irradiation for breast reconstruction is that fat grafting is a real problem solver and remarkably improves skin quality and signs of radiation or actinic damage.
- Former beliefs still echoing proposing cautiousness in cases of breast reconstruction are today at least outdated. All the major Plastic Surgery Societies have concluded that fat grafting is safe and recommended for breast reconstruction.
